Ajay K. Bhat: Working on next generation gyroscopes
I am a graduate student at Cornell University
, pursuing PhD in Physics (Cornell Physics). I work with Prof. Sunil Bhave (OxideMEMS) in the ECE Department on developing next generation gyroscopes. I did my undergraduate studies at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani,
and obtained a Dual Degree in Integrated M.Sc. (Honors) in Physics
and B.E. (Honors) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
For my year-long master's thesis, I worked at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai
, under the guidance of Dr. Mandar Deshmukh in the Nanoelectronics Lab. My research work is
theoretical study and simulation of a hybrid system of microstructures and cold atom gas interacting optically and building and demonstrating this hybrid system.
Life @ Cornell
is an American University located in Ithaca, New York. It offers various UG, PG and Research Programmes in its colleges. In 2012, Cornell ranked 14th in the QS World University Rankings
and 16th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
Cornell, a research university, is ranked fourth in the world in producing the largest number of graduates who goes on to pursue PhDs in engineering or the natural sciences at American institutions.
The facilities and academic environment are very stimulating at Cornell. The University is in a small town, Ithaca in NY State. It is primarily a college town, so not so much of a city life, which is both good and bad. The winters are really cold here.
I was selected for Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research’s (JNCASR) Summer Research Fellowship Programme (SRFP), 2009 and was awarded Scholarship at BITS-Pilani covering 50% of the tuition fees.

BITS-Pilani helped me a lot!
Cornell is one of the best universities for my research interest and hence I wanted to come here. Being at BITS really helped me a lot. I had the chance to do a 1-year research project while being a student at BITS. That helped in making my application profile that much better.
My teachers all along were the ones who encouraged me to follow my interest but more importantly, my parents gave me all the support to achieve this in my career.
Advice to the prospective students
Prospective students should just be determined to achieve their goals. Irrespective of the career you choose, always, determination towards that career leads to achieve success.
