Donald Trump recognises Jerusalem as Israel's capital

Current Affairs
  • US President Donald Trump on 6th December recognised Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
  • He ordered to start the process of moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city. 
  • President Trump recognised that the specific boundaries of Israeli sovereignty in Jerusalem are subject to final status negotiations between the parties and reaffirmed the United States' support for the status quo at the Temple Mount, also known as Haram al Sharif.

National:

Minorities Commission sets up committee to study the matter to give minority status to Hindus
  • National Commission for Minorities has set up a three member committee to study the matter to give minority status to Hindus in eight states including Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab. 
  • The Commission chairman, Syed Ghayorul Hasan Rizvi said the committee will give its report within three months and after examining the report the Commission will take a view over the issue. 
  • Last month, the Supreme Court had refused to entertain a petition seeking its direction to Centre to grant minority status to Hindus in eight states. 
  • The Court had said the issue needed to be decided by National Commission for Minorities and asked the petitioner to approach the commission.
  • The other states are Lakshadweep, Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur

Govt. enhances monetary allowances for Gallantry Award winners
  • Government has enhanced the monetary allowances for the Gallantry Award winners. 
  • The enhancement is for the recipients of post-independence Gallantry Award, pre-independence Gallantry Award and the monetary allowance attached to Jangi Inam, a pre-independence Gallantry Award.
  • This will come into effect from 1st of August this year. 
  • The monetary allowances for Param Vir Chakra (PVC) recipients has been hiked from ten thousand to 20 thousand rupees, for Ashok Chakra from six thousand to 12 thousand rupees while Mahavir Chakra recipients will get 10 thousand instead of five thousand rupees. 
  • Distinguished Service Order, Indian Order of Merit and Indian Distinguished Service Medal will now get eight thousand in place of four thousands rupees.
  • Jangi Inam's monetary allowances has been revised from five hundred to one thousand rupees.

India, Cuba sign MoU for enhanced cooperation in health sector
  • India and Cuba on 6th December signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for enhanced cooperation in the health sector. 
  • Health Minister J P Nadda and Public Health Minister of Cuba, Dr Roberto Tomas Morales Ojeda, signed the MoU in New Delhi. 
  • The objective of this MoU is to establish comprehensive inter-ministerial and inter-institutional cooperation between the two countries in the field of health by pooling technical, scientific and financial and human resources.

Economy:

Reserve Bank of India keeps repo rate unchanged at 6%
  • The Reserve Bank of India kept its key lending rate unchanged after its monetary policy review, on 6th December. 
  • The 6-member Monetary Policy Committee headed by Reserve Bank of India Governor Urjit Patel kept the repo rate, the rate at which the RBI lends, short-term, to banks, unchanged at 6 per cent. 
  • The reverse repo rate was kept steady at 5.75 per cent. 
  • The Reserve Bank said the reason for the decision was achieving the medium-term target for consumer price index inflation of 4 per cent, while supporting growth. 
  • Expecting the price situation to harden, the RBI raised its inflation estimate to 4.3 to 4.7 per cent, from the earlier projection of 4.2 to 4.6 per cent, for the second half of the current fiscal. 
  • The apex bank retained its GDP growth forecast of 6.7 per cent for 2017-18. 
  • The MPC has also retained its annual GVA forecast for the financial year 2018 of 6.7 per cent recognizing several significant developments and emphasizing the Government’s reform efforts such as GST, Bank Recapitalization Package and improving Ease of Doing Business Ranking.

Sports:

India win three-Test series against Sri Lanka
  • India on 6th December won the three-Test series against Sri Lanka 1-nil after the final Test between the neighbours ended in a draw at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in New Delhi.
  • Skipper Virat Kohli was adjudged Man of the Match and Man of the Series for his two double centuries.

Sushil Kumar resigns as National Sports Observer
  • Double Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar has also quit his role as a National Sports Observer for wrestling. 
    He was among 12 national observers appointed in March this year.
