Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering is a diverse subject that derives its breadth from the need to design, manufacture, test and sell everything from small individual parts and devices (e.g., nano materials, microscale sensors and inkjet printer nozzles etc.,) to large systems (e.g., high speed trains, ships, trucks and spacecrafts etc.,). Mechanical engineering is one industry without whose products, production in other industries would simply be impossible. The auto, aircraft, electric and electronics industries, to name a few, all need the products that are of the machines, of the mechanical engineering industry.

For many years, the countries - the United States, Germany and Japan - were the leaders in mechanical engineering, measured based on annual sales that are followed distantly by Italy, France, United Kingdom and China. India, with the advent of newer breed of Mechanical Engineers who possess extraordinary skill set to innovate new indigenous products are poised to make our country a strong competitor to China, Japan and other Asian countries.

India is presently poised for exponential growth of automobile, power and aerospace industries in the next 5-10 years. However, to meet the needs of Human Resource requirements of mechanical engineers for the above industry segments, the present supply of fresh engineers from Engineering Colleges in terms of both quality & quantity is not sufficient.

Eligibility:
For admission into a bachelor’s degree, the candidate must have passed the Higher Secondary School Certificate (10+2) examination. In AP, EAMCET is mandatory and for IITs and NITs,it is mandatory to qualify in the Joint Entrance Examinations (JEE).

The eligibility criteria for pursuing a master’s degree are holding a bachelor's degree in (B.E/B.Tech) or any other equivalent branches of engineering.

Higher Education
Mechanical Engineers may opt for higher education in core mechanical engineering or allied fields like Turbo machinery, Aerospace, Aeronautical/ Marine Engineering or Mechatronics. They may also opt for higher education in IT field like Computer Science or opt for Management Education. Higher education can be pursued in India or abroad. It is easy to get admission in foreign universities even if one does not have high academic scores, provided they qualify in GRE, GMAT, TOEFL, IELTS etc.

Role of Mechanical Engineer & Skills needed in Mechanical Engineering
The role of a mechanical engineer is to take a product from an idea to the marketplace. In order to accomplish this, broad ranges of skills are needed. The mechanical engineer needs to acquire particular skills and knowledge to help him understand the forces and the thermal environment that a product, its parts, or its subsystems will encounter; to design them for functionality, aesthetics, and the ability to withstand the forces and the thermal environment they will be subjected to and to determine the best way to manufacture them and ensure they will operate without failure.

Perhaps the one skill that the mechanical engineer’s exclusive domain is the ability to analyze and design objects and systems with motion. Team working skills, communication skills, leadership ability, entrepreneurial instinct, creative thinking ability, hard work and discipline are the essential qualities that one should possess to succeed in Mechanical Engineering Career.

Mechanical Engineering - What does it give to the World?
Mechanical engineering is perhaps the broadest and most diverse of engineering disciplines. Mechanical engineers play a central role in such industries as automotive (from the car chassis to its every subsystem—engine, transmission, sensors);
  • aerospace (airplanes, aircraft engines, control systems for airplanes and spacecraft);
  • biotechnology (implants, prosthetic devices, fluidic systems for pharmaceutical industries);
  • computers and electronics (disk drives, printers, cooling systems, semiconductor tools);
  • micro-electromechanical systems, or MEMS (sensors, actuators, micropower generation);
  • energy conversion (gas turbines, wind turbines, solar energy, fuel cells); environmental control (HVAC, air-conditioning, refrigeration, compressors); automation (robots, data and image acquisition, recognition, control);
  • manufacturing (machining, machine tools, prototyping, microfabrication).
Specialized mechanical engineering subjects include biomechanics, robotics, cartilage-tissue engineering, energy conversion, laser-assisted materials processing, combustion, MEMS, microfluidic devices, fracture mechanics, nano mechanics, mechanisms, micropower generation, tribology (friction and wear), and vibrations. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) currently lists 36 technical divisions, from advanced energy systems and aerospace engineering to solid-waste engineering and textile engineering.

Career Options for Mechanical Engineers
The Mechanical Engineering program is designed to provide students with a wide range of options within the field of mechanical engineering. The discipline is very broad, encompassing elements of the areas such as mechatronics, energy science and technology, solid and fluid dynamics, computational simulation, micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), nano and micro-mechanics, propulsion, sensing and control design, biomechanical engineering.

For those interested in applied scientific and mathematical aspects of the discipline, graduate study in mechanical engineering can lead to a career of research and teaching.

Automobile engineering, marine engineering, ship building, robotics engineering, turbo-machinery engineering, aerospace engineering, environmental engineering, CAD/CAM, Tool Design, Production Engineering, Mechatronics and Computer Science engineering are promising higher education paths after graduation in Mechanical Engineering. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is one field where plenty of jobs are available, but the Computer Aided Engineering Companies like Honeywell, GE & Infotech etc., who need specialists in the CFD are not able to find suitable talent to fit into the job requirements.

Top Companies
All major IT Services companies like TCS, Infosys, Cognizant, Wipro Technologies & Accenture etc., consider Mechanical Engineering graduates on par with CSE engineers for their fresher hiring. Many other core companies like Maruti Suzuki, M&M, FIAT, Hyundai, Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland & Intergraph etc., and PSUs like Midhani, BEL, BHEL, BEML, IOCL, NTPC etc hire Mechanical Engineers in good numbers. Govt jobs are also available in good number for Mechanical Engineers through UPSC Engineering Services Examination, RRB recruitment, APPSC exams, PSUs through GATE etc.

Seats: 36530 seats have been allotted in AP for engineering counseling in the year 2012
